How will we remember Copenhagen

I wrote this poem on new years and thought I would share it:
The morning that followed
Our message was echoed.
A failure! A failure!
My heart in despair.
The science lost, funding tossed,
No commitment in sight.
A stench of injustice,
The result: A failed plight.
“What more did you expect?”
Accusing voices chimed,
“Your efforts are a waste
Of carbon, cash and time”.
Is it a [...]

The Truth Of What Happened at Copenhagen

By Fidel Castro
21st December 2009
(Cross posted from Countercurrents.org, )
The youth is more interested than anyone else in the future.
Until very recently, the discussion revolved around the kind of society we would have. Today, the discussion centers on whether human society will survive.
These are not dramatic phrases. We must get used to the true facts. Hope [...]

Accord or Discord!

As was being expected in the last few days of the COP, we do not have a “fair, ambitious and binding deal” in place. What we have is an agreement which is neither fair nor binding. It is being called the “Copenhagen Accord”.
“We underline that climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our [...]

I always had answers, until now!

When I was in grade V and I had a tough time with Math, I was somehow able to find answers! Even while sitting for the entrance examinations, I sometimes struggled but was able to answer! IIT was not a smooth ride either but still, we could find answers! But when a fourteen year old [...]

Confused, Connived and Caught Red-handed

The international negotiations on Climate Change were never set to give the world the real deal that it hoped for. All the world leaders, diplomats and statesmen made statements that could have made a cynic turn hopeful of an outcome of the negotiations but alas, here at the final day of the negotiations, the mood [...]

Hunger for Survival

Every now and then I read a blog that announces that the writer has had an epiphany and wonder if I will ever start a post with that. I didn’t have an epiphany yesterday but I did change. A few months ago if you had asked me to attend a candlelight vigil for survival I [...]

D-Day in Copenhagens

The moment of truth has arrived. Today will reveal whether the world will be able to ‘Seal the deal’ on climate change in Copenhagen. After two years of negotiations, now is the time we will see how serious our leaders are in addressing the greatest crisis facing humanity and our natural world: climate change.
193 nations [...]

Mohamed Nasheed’s speech reflecting the breaking up of COP negotiations

“This is the end game in more ways then one.
I think we should celebrate the progress made so far.
No one expected such an historic endeavor to be easy. I am still optimistic that we can leave this meeting with a planet saving deal.
I would like to point out that during the course of the last [...]

Is anyone taking responsibility?

With no commitments or even indications of long term finance from the developed countries, particularly the US, being put on the table, it is really not clear how the least developed countries and small island states are going to start adaptation programs back in their countries and save their people. With mitigation numbers already far [...]

Youth Enquiry with Yvo De Boer

I want to tell you a story of my home city of Mumbai. Every day I travel by the local train from college to work, to meetings…. The trains are the arteries of a city of 15 million strong. The trains are a full of colors, cultures and voices; women complaining about their daily chores, [...]

I wish i was born in Bolivia!!

How does one judge leadership to meet the objectives for a cause? Looking at historical precedents we have seen various types of motivation for leaders to live up to for their subjects. The father of industrial revolution – Henry Ford’s sole motivation was to mechanise prodution process at the same time provide employment to Americans. [...]

Go Push Go

Yesterday was a lucky day for me at the Bella Center. I met Push or ‘Pushpanath Krishnamurthy’ who has walked all the way from his home at Oxford in the UK to the UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen, to show his solidarity and support to the cause of climate change. I was fortunate enough to [...]
