Global Day of Action Against Climate Change - 6th December 2008

There are several events taking place across India to coincide with the Global Day of Action. The Climate Action in India Coalition are planning a range of activities across India.

Delhi: Indian Protest against Climate Change are planning a mass demonstration in Delhi.

The march will start at 9.30 am. Youth from different universities and people from other organisations will congregate in a prearranged area before the march. At 10.30 there will be a street play on climate change. There will be speeches on climate change and justice from some important players on climate change. Some colleges and societies will arrange something with a climate change theme. There will also be an exhibition of paintings about climate change. This event on Global Day of action is supported by Oxfam, SANSAD and IYCN.

Kerala: While the Ocean Race is live and active in Kochi, there will be a lot of media present. The Indian Youth Climate Network, will use this opportunity to pass on the message of climate change through the international media. They plan to stage a Kerala folklore presentation performed by the Viyali group with the theme of climate change. This will take place at the Volvo Ocean Race Base Camp at Kochi. The venue could become an iconic figure of Kochi/Kerala once the passes through it. The youth from the locality would also like to use this opportunity to stage a peaceful demonstration with the cultural heritage of Kerala on the threats of climate change. Good media coverage is expected at this event to expose the message of climate change to a wider audience.

Uttar Pradesh: There are plans to organise a Seminar/Rally for the Global Day of Action. There will also be a sport painting competition with a Global Climate Change Theme.

Ahmadabad: There are a few organisations planning an event on climate change. More information will follow soon.

With the last Global Day of Action against Climate Change (GDA) on 8th December 2007 consisting of hundreds of climate actions and demonstrations in over 70 countries world-wide, we are really keen to make this years Global Day of Action on 6th December even bigger to put pressure on world leaders during the upcoming UN climate talks in Poznan, Poland.

The UN climate talks in Poznan will be crucial for getting an efficient and fair international emissions reductions treaty that follows the Kyoto-Protocol. This years climate talks will be even more important, because we have an unique opportunity to sway the opinions of delegates, whereas by the time of next year’s UN climate talks in Copenhagen, they will probably already decided on their position.

The Global Climate Campaign
is the collective name given to all the organisations, groups and individuals around the world who came together for the Global Day of Action on climate.

The Global Day of Action Against Climate Change has occurred every year since 2005 at the time of the annual United Nations Talks on climate change (the COP or “Conference of Parties” to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change or UNFCCC). People from all around the world have come together on the same day to demand urgent action on climate, and climate justice, from the governments of the world meeting at the annual climate talks. It’s not possible for thousands of people from all around the world to come together literally in the same place so the Global Day of Action has consisted of demonstrations and events all around the world on the same day - or as near as possible to that as circumstances allow. Usually that day has been the Saturday midway through the climate talks.
